On August 24th, Covered CA announced that it is extending the Special Enrollment Period through the end of 2020 for those impacted by the recent fires affecting the entire state of California. With more than 500 fires raging across California, Covered CA has announced new qualifying life events.
New Qualifying Life Events through the end of 2020:
- Impacted by wildfires
- Loss of job (regardless of if you are offered group insurance or not)
- Loss of income
Covered CA has the authority to modify the special enrollment when there is a state of emergency. Previously, Covered CA extended the Special Enrollment Period through August 31st due to COVID-19. With over 500 active fires and 2 of the largest fires in California’s history along with the continued impact of COVID-19 on jobs and health benefits, Covered CA has taken the initiative to accommodate the constantly changing needs of Californians by extending this modified Special Enrollment Period through the end of 2020. Anyone who has one of the above qualifying life events is eligible to apply for health insurance within 60 days of their qualifying life event.
